A motion submitted by Hillingdon Labour Councillor Stuart Mathers on modern slavery passed at Full Council on Thursday night – once the Conservatives had amended the motion to refer the Modern Slavery Charter to Cabinet for consideration, rather than it be adopted by a vote at Full Council.
The original motion submitted by Cllr Mathers called on the Council to adopt the Modern Slavery Charter which requires organisations to require its contractors to comply fully with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 with contract termination as a potential sanction.
Speaking during the debate, Cllr Mathers said:
“The thought of a child being trapped by modern slavery in our Borough is more than uncomfortable. It is heartbreaking and we must play our part and act tonight to do all we can to prevent it.”
